NHL Transactions:

  • Defenseman Mike Mathesonsigned an eight-year contract with the Florida Panthers on Monday.  Financial terms of the contract were not released, but TSN reported it is worth $39 million ($4.875 million average annual value). Matheson, 23, is in the final season of his three-year, entry-level contract and could have become a restricted free agent July 1, 2018.  Matheson is plus-2 with four shots on goal in two games this season. He had 17 points (seven goals, 10 assists) in 81 games last season. He was selected by the Panthers with the No. 23 pick of the 2012 NHL Draft.
  • Goalie Calvin Pickardwas traded by Vegas Golden Knights to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday for forward Tobias Lindberg and a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.  Pickard was selected by Vegas from the Colorado Avalanche in the NHL Expansion Draft on June 21 and was expected to be the No. 2 goalie behind Marc-Andre Fleury. But Pickard was waived Thursday after the Golden Knights clamed goalie Malcolm Subban off waivers from the Boston Bruins on Tuesday.  Subban is expected to back up Fleury. The 23-year-old is 0-2-0 and has allowed six goals on 22 shots in two NHL games.  Pickard, 25, was 15-31-2 with a 2.98 goals-against average and .904 save percentage in 50 games (48 starts) with the Avalanche last season. He could compete with Curtis McElhinney to be the backup in Toronto behind Frederik Andersen.  Lindberg, 22, has two assists in six NHL games with the Maple Leafs in 2015-16.

Injuries:

  • Defensemen Erik Karlssonand Johnny Oduya did not travel Monday with the Ottawa Senators for their three-game road trip through Western Canada.  The Senators begin the trip Tuesday against the Vancouver Canucks (10 p.m. ET; SNV, TSN5, RDS, NHL.TV), and coach Guy Boucher said it was too soon to rule them out for the rest of the trip. Ottawa plays the Calgary Flames on Friday and Edmonton Oilers on Saturday.  Karlsson, a two-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman, missed the first two games recovering from foot surgery he had June 14.  Oduya sustained a lower-body injury in the season opener, a 5-4 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals last Thursday.  “They are both highly doubtful for [Tuesday] but you never know, might get a call and they are on a plane and they are here so I don’t know,” Boucher said. “They are skating and they are going hard so that’s what I am waiting to see the results of.”

Suspensions:

  • Louis Blues defenseman Robert Bortuzzohas been fined $3,091.40, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for cross-checking New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson during NHL Game No. 33 in New York on Monday, Oct. 9, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.  The incident occurred at 3:56 of the second period. Bortuzzo was assessed a pair of minor penalties for cross-checking.

·         Other Interesting Stories:

Honors:

  • Washington Capitals left winger Alex Ovechkin, Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleuryand Philadelphia Flyers right winger Wayne Simmonds have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Oct. 8.  Ovechkin led for the League in goals and points (7-0-7) as the Capitals opened the season with two victories.  Fleury went 2-0-0 with a 0.98 goals-against average and a .973 save percentage as the Golden Knights opened the season with two victories.  Simmonds tied for second in the League in goals with four (4-0-4) — including two game-winners — as the Flyers began the season with two victories in three starts on the road.

Minor League Hockey Minute

·         Wayne:  After a pair of stellar outings on Friday and Saturday, forward Warren Foegele has been named CCM/AHL Player of the Week.  The 21-year-old rookie netted a pair of goals in his pro debut on Oct. 6 against the Hartford Wolf Pack, including the game winner with a minute left in regulation. Foegele then followed that up with another two goals the next night in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, including another game winner, with both coming shorthanded.  A third-round draft pick by Carolina in 2014, Foegele was named OHL Playoffs MVP last season after helping lead the Erie Otters to a league title.  Foegele is the eighth player in franchise history to earn AHL Player of the Week honors and the fourth forward, joining Aleksi Saarela last season, Brock McGinn in 2014-15 and Zach Boychuk in 2010-11.
